How to Find Your Emergency Water Shut-Off Valve in San Diego
Where is my main water shut off valve? In most San Diego homes, you'll find it in one of three places: along the front exterior wall near a hose bibb, near the garage by the home's plumbing system or water heater, or inside the water meter box near the street curb. The valve serving the entire house is different from the valve connected directly to the water heater. The water heater shut-off only stops water flowing into the appliance. The home's main shut-off controls the water supply to every plumbing fixture.

The Street Level Water Meter
If you cannot find a shut-off valve at the house, check the water meter near the street curb. The concrete meter box contains the municipal water meter and a shut-off valve that controls water entering the property.
Carefully remove the lid and locate the valve beside the meter. A water meter key or adjustable wrench is commonly used to operate this valve. Replace the cover securely after shutting off the water to keep dirt and debris out of the meter box.

Gate Valve vs. Ball Valve: How to Turn It Off
Two valve styles are found in most homes.
Gate Valve
- Round wheel handle.
- Turn the wheel clockwise slowly until it stops.
- Do not force the valve if it becomes difficult to turn.
Ball Valve
- Straight lever handle.
- Turn the handle one-quarter turn until it sits perpendicular to the pipe.
- When the handle is perpendicular, the water supply is off.
Operate either valve gently. Older plumbing components can become damaged if excessive force is applied.
