Here at Anderson, we love talking about toilets. We know it’s not always a favorite conversation topic for some, but hey, the key to happiness is doing what you love. And part of the job we love includes these porcelain thrones. We all have one. We all need one. And when one of them breaks in San Diego, we want to be the one you call to fix it.
So, in honor of National Toilet Tank Repair Month, here are some of the most common causes of toilet tank issues:
1. A Ballcock That Needs Replacement
Nowadays, most modern toilets have a float-cup/arm style fill valve — but older toilets have what is referred to as “ballcocks”. They often come in a plunger or diaphragm type-style and are identified as the float ball in your tank that operates the valve (via a long arm). Usually, an adjustment or two on this may be needed. If your toilet is running, you can bend the extended arm down to shut off the water. However, these are problematic and bit outdated, making it a good idea to switch to a modern float-cup style.
2. Broken Flush Valve
One of the hardest working pieces of your toilet tank is the flush valve. Typically, this is a plastic or brass fitting that is located at the center of your tank and attached to the bottom opening; a flapper or float ball sits against the valve opening to keep water in the tank until you flush. Over time, the seal can get damaged, parts can be worn out, or something may get stuck below it. That being said, the most common sign that indicates that there is an issue with your flush valve is a continually running toilet.
3. Water Level is Low in the Tank
When your tank’s water level is low, you’ll have less of a productive flush. This can lead to clogs and blockages. Additionally, this could be due to a bad trip assembly (the part of the flush handle attached to the tank), low water pressure, or a float ball or fill valve that needs adjustment. Either way, the longer you ignore it, the higher chance you have of dealing with a significant plumbing clog or back-up — so it’s time to give us a call! We’re ready to tackle even the toughest clogged drain repairs!
