The Importance of Changing an Air Filter

Mar 27, 2020

When you’re a homeowner, there are some “must-do” tasks to take on. From vacuuming your humble abode weekly to making sure that last night’s dishes are taken out of the dishwasher and put away — the home maintenance chores are seemingly endless.

However, there is one small detail that many homeowners overlook that shouldn’t be taken lightly: changing the HVAC system’s air filter!

Here are some reasons why you should consider changing it sooner, rather than putting off for another month.

Changing air filters

Why Do Air Filters Need to Be Changed?

Prevents Airborne Debris From Circulating

One of the main functions of an air filter is that it will help stop stubborn allergens (i.e., dust, dirt, mold, bacteria, pet dander and more ) from entering your HVAC unit and circulating throughout your home. And when that happens, your air filter will be there to stop it from circulating.

Now, if your filter has been in use for quite some time (say, over three months), then that could cause a problem with not only your filter trapping allergens but also with your unit running efficiently as a whole.

Helps Your Unit Run Efficiently

Since an air filter will help catch any lingering air particles from making their way into your HVAC unit, it eventually ends up covered in “gunk” — which will reduce airflow and make it difficult for your unit to breathe. And when this happens, your HVAC system will have to work twice as hard to produce the temperature you’re looking to have present in your home.

Another downside to this is that an HVAC unit that is overworked can not only increase your overall energy usage (hello, higher utility bills), but it can even cause your unit to break down, gradually — hence needing repairs.

When Should I Change the Air Filters in my Home?

Approximately Every Two-to-Three Months

Ideally, most air filters should be replaced every two-to-three months, This ensures that your unit will function efficiently, in addition to making sure you and your family reap the ultimate benefit of clean air.

Of course, there are some exceptions to this rule — but what do those entail?

Things to Consider

How Often Do You Use Your Unit?

While the standard recommendation is to replace your air filter every two-to-three months, it also depends on how often you use your HVAC system. If it’s often, then you’ll want to replace it within that period.

On the other hand, if you don’t use your unit as often, then your filters may still be in good graces. However, if you opt to use filters of a higher grade and quality, then you may only need to replace them approximately every six months.

Do You Have Pets?

Another thing to keep in mind is that if you have fur babies in your home, there’s a chance that they’ll shed. And when that’s the case, strands of their fur will go airborne, making their way into your air filter — creating more problems for your unit. Therefore, you’ll want to consider changing your air filter a little more frequently.
