What to Do When You Suspect a Gas Leak

share

As crazy and hectic as your day might be, there is one thing that can and will always stop you in your tracks: a gas leak. If you notice a not-so-familiar gas smell in your home — don’t panic, but take action fast. A gas leak is a serious issue that should not be ignored, and safety is critical.

Some Common Signs

Beyond the smell of sulfur, additional symptoms come along with a gas leak. If you suddenly have a headache, are nauseous, or feel dizzy or lightheaded, a gas leak could be to blame, and you’ll want to open the windows and get out of your home immediately.

So what steps should you take if you smell gas in your home?

Get Out

Your safety is critical — so if you smell gas near or around your home, you’ll want to evacuate calmly. As you leave, be sure to keep doors open and extinguish any open flames. You’ll want to call the gas company, but be sure to do it far from home.

Don’t Flick The Switch

The biggest thing you’ll want to avoid is creating any spark. Lighting a match or smoking a cigarette is obvious no-nos but there are several actions that could create a dangerous spark. Do not turn on a light switch or use a flashlight. Avoid anything with electricity that can cause a spark — including your cell phone.

Pick Up The Phone

Once you have gotten rid of any flames (think candles, incense, etc.) and left the area, your next step is to call the gas company. They will most likely shut off the gas, a necessary step to ensure safety, then they will inspect or instruct you to have a contractor that can inspect the problem to confirm if it is safe to reenter.

Call Anderson Plumbing, Heating & Air to get the problem diagnosed and repaired quickly so you can get your gas back on.
