If you’re in need of a new heating system for your home, consider an energy-saving heat pump. This type of system is a great option for those who don’t have access to natural gas or propane, or for those who are not able to accommodate the proper ventilation needs of other types of heating systems.

Heat pumps are different than other heating systems, and therefore require the care and expertise of trained professionals. At Anderson Plumbing, Heating & Air, our San Diego heat pump services include both repairs and installations. We can even help you with heat pump maintenance to ensure that you’re getting the most out of your system.

How Do Heat Pumps Work?

In contrast to other types of heating and cooling systems, heat pumps warm up or cool down space by transferring heat, rather than burning fuel.

  • During the hotter months of the year, heat pumps pull heat from inside your home and transfer it outside to cool your home.
  • In the winter months, this process is reversed, and warmed air drawn from outside is cycled through your home’s air ducts.

The whole system works by using coils that contain very cold liquid refrigerant. As air passes over these coils, it is either warmed or cooled. Additionally, air that passes over the coils is dehumidified, meaning the humidity level in your home is reduced.

Signs You Need Heat Pump Repair

If you already have a heat pump, chances are you’ll eventually need repairs. Much like any system in your home, heat pumps can experience issues through repeated use and normal wear and tear. There are a few things to look out for that can signal a problem with your heat pump.

Signs that you might need heat pump repairs include:

  • A unit that is making strange noises
  • Insufficient heating or cooling
  • A heat pump that won’t turn on or off
  • Development of ice on or near the unit
  • Reduced energy efficiency/increased bills
  • Unusual cycling, both too frequent and infrequent
  • A heat pump that is older than 15 years

If you’ve noticed any of the above issues with your heat pump or ductless mini split, it’s time to call the professionals at Anderson Plumbing, Heating & Air for heat pump repairs in San Diego and the surrounding areas. Our technicians are highly trained, as well as background-checked, drug-tested, and licensed and insured for your peace of mind.

  • Easy DIY for Better AC & Heating Efficiency
No need to call a heating and air conditioning repair or installation contractor for this easy task. Simply purchase a new air filter and replace the current one. Your air quality and efficiency will be improved by this simple step. Be sure to check your air filter every 30 days during summer use, and replace it when needed.

  • When to Replace Heating & Air Conditioning System
A common question I get asked is, “When do I need to replace my furnace or air conditioner?" Actually, you can keep repairing virtually forever, but this is not necessarily cost effective. A good rule of thumb is: Replace when your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old, and your furnace when it is 15 years old (or repair costs start to exceed the value of unit). Heating and cooling equipment has become MUCH more efficient in recent years. Replacement of older, less efficient systems should absolutely be considered now based on current financing options, tax benefits, municipality rebates and low-interest rates. You should consider replacement if you have any of these concerns: System needs expensive repairs, the utility bill is too high, rooms are too hot or too cold, you have humidity problems, your home has excessive dust, or the system is too noisy.

  • Improper Ducting Can Destroy Your HVAC System...And Your Utility Savings!
Ductwork is one of the most overlooked, but most important components of your heating and air conditioning system. When our Project Managers come to do an engineering analysis, they will use Duct-a-Lator to ensure that your system is sized properly and is using the proper CFM or cubic feet per minute. When ducts are undersized they will cause system breakdowns and significant loss of efficiency. Always make sure the ducting is checked when you have an AC or heater repair or replacement your HVAC system.

  • Why Is It Important to Protect Your Heating and Air System?
When investing in a new comfort system ( heating and air conditioning), or keeping the one you have to run at peak efficiency, it's important to keep it maintained. One of the biggest causes of breakdown is dirty coils and motors. A great solution is getting routine maintenance like you would for your personal vehicle. For HVAC systems, annual maintenance is recommended (and required in some warranties). Even better, is to add an air filtration and purification system. An air conditioner evaporator coil that has dirt as thin as plastic wrap will cause you to lose 20% efficiency! Also, the dirt can cause the motors and compressor to overwork. This causes increased utility bills and breakdowns.
