How Do Heat Pumps Work?

You might wonder how heat pumps work and what makes them so efficient. Rather than burning fuel, heat pumps use refrigerant inside coils to gather heat from outside and then transfer that heat into your home.

Pulling heat from cold air seems counterintuitive. It is a strange concept, but despite it being cold outside, there is still heat to gather up. Modern heat pumps work up to negative 20 degrees Fahrenheit, so you don’t have to worry about it not working when it’s cold outside. The refrigerant gathers heat from outside and then passes through a compressor, compressing the gas to warm it further. When the heat is released indoors, the refrigerant cools down and returns to a gaseous state, returning to the outdoor unit.

The compressor consumes most of the energy required by the heat pump, which is about the same as a standard baseboard heater. The difference is that heat pumps produce around three times more heat than a traditional baseboard heater, making it much more efficient.

While heat pumps are more expensive than a standard heater, they make up for it in energy efficiency and the ability to reverse their heating process. Heat pumps can replace both your heater and your air conditioning unit.
