Are attic fans good or bad?

Jun 14, 2011

If you have an attic, then you already know the answer to this question. Attic fans are necessary for keeping your home cooled during summer months and also to help prevent the growth of mold and mildew. Many attics are exposed to high humidity levels in both the winter and summer months, and having a good attic fan helps ease these worries.

Does Your Home Have an Attic Fan

Conventional fans, however, can be quite a pain to install, not to mention the fact that industrial sized attic fans can be quite costly. There is another alternative. There are highly functioning solar-powered fan units made especially for attics. This is something to take into consideration before making your final decision.

Solar-powered units have several benefits. For instance, they are much simpler to install than a conventional or industrial attic fan. Not to mention that with conventional fans, they must be maintained and checked from time to time to ensure that they are working correctly. However, with solar-powered attic fans, they work on their own and are virtually maintenance-free. Also, there are no electric cords that you will have to worry about, such as if you have mice in your attic that could chew through the wires.

Also, electric attic fans are expensive from installation to maintenance. Also, the electric bill will skyrocket because of the need for it to be running perpetually. Even if you plan and install an electric fan yourself, the costs far outweigh the benefits when compared with a solar-powered attic fan. With solar-powered attic fans, the only expenses that you need to worry about are the cost of the fan and a minimal installation expense, if there is any. Many times, these can be installed by yourself, leaving you that much more money in your pocket. If you are still on the fence, just know that 1)you must have an attic fan, and 2)why not have one that costs you little to nothing to maintain? It’s a no-brainer.
