Tips & Advice

Tips & Advice From Our Experts

  • What Are the Options When PVC or ABS Pipe Has Failed?
With PVC you have a couple of choices if your pipe is failing; one is to repair the bad connection that is causing a stoppage. The other is to go ahead and replace the whole line. If the line is about 40 years old and is showing signs of age throughout, definitely replace. These days, you can replace the pipe without a digging trench. Based on the condition of the line, it may be an acceptable option to do just that. However, if the offset worsens trenchless may no longer be an option.

  • Exercise Your Plumbing Fixtures!
All faucets and valves in your home should be regularly exercised to keep them from freezing in place. For instance, a single handle shower valve may become mineralized and calcified causing it to not function correctly when called upon. Just like you and me, regular exercise keeps our bodies functioning at a higher level than if we sat doing nothing every day. Anderson Plumbing, Heating and Air can visit your home, check the valves throughout your home, and advise you of any options or possible repairs that need to be considered now or in the near future. An ounce of prevention can mean the difference between having a functioning shower valve in the spare bathroom when guests arrive or having to call a plumber.

  • Sewer Mainline Stoppage - Foreign Objects
Unless there is something structurally wrong with the sewer mainline, they rarely back up. Even back-ups that seem to be caused by foreign objects (often graciously donated by toddlers ;)) are typical because of a structural issue with the line. It's uncommon that the cause of a backup is solely the foreign object's presence in the pipe. What more commonly happens, is the object passes through a smaller secondary line that comes from a sink or toilet and enters the mainline. When something like a child’s toy gets flushed down the toilet and it lodges at the connection or beyond, the problem is not that a child’s toy was flushed down the toilet, it is that there is an offset in the sewer line that is in need of repair.

  • Why Is It Important to Protect Your Heating and Air System?
When investing in a new comfort system ( heating and air conditioning), or keeping the one you have to run at peak efficiency, it's important to keep it maintained. One of the biggest causes of breakdown is dirty coils and motors. A great solution is getting routine maintenance like you would for your personal vehicle. For HVAC systems, annual maintenance is recommended (and required in some warranties). Even better, is to add an air filtration and purification system. An air conditioner evaporator coil that has dirt as thin as plastic wrap will cause you to lose 20% efficiency! Also, the dirt can cause the motors and compressor to overwork. This causes increased utility bills and breakdowns.

  • Improper Ducting Can Destroy Your HVAC System...And Your Utility Savings!
Ductwork is one of the most overlooked, but most important components of your heating and air conditioning system. When our Project Managers come to do an engineering analysis, they will use Duct-a-Lator to ensure that your system is sized properly and is using the proper CFM or cubic feet per minute. When ducts are undersized they will cause system breakdowns and significant loss of efficiency. Always make sure the ducting is checked when you have an AC or heater repair or replacement your HVAC system.
