Tips & Advice From Our Experts

  • Don't Let Drips Drain Your Wallet...
High water bill? Could be any number of things, but methodical troubleshooting can save a lot of time and money. First, listen and look for any obvious signs of leaks. The dog may have found a new favorite place to nap which could indicate a slab leak. Check for movement at your water meter while you are sure nothing is running. Dye test toilet tanks to identify failing flappers and flush valves. Do you hear your toilet filling up at night? Look closely at ceilings and baseboards for discoloration and/or bubbling. Check under sinks and place newspaper on the bottoms of vanities to clearly see if drips occur. This is a good starting point, but if you still are unable to identify the origin of a leak, call a licensed plumber, this will save you time and money in the long run. And remember, don't let drips drain your wallet!

  • Reduce Allergens Inside Your Home
These days our homes have become “germ buckets”, my term! The new building codes and tighter homes keep the weather outside, but they also keep germs inside. The Environmental Protection Agency, states, “air indoors where we spend as much as 90 percent of our time can be more polluted than even city smog”. Dust collecting on end tables and bookshelves is only a fraction of what's actually swimming around in the air. If you are like me, allergic to dust mites, pollen, dander, mold, and smoke, look into a whole-home air filtration system. It works for me and most others concerned about their health!

  • How Tree Roots Invade Pipes
A very common reason for stoppages are tree roots. Tree roots typically enter a pipe through a bad connection. They can’t enter a sewer system that is constructed properly. Roots should never be present. Roots quickly become established and as they grow, they further damage the connection – kind of like a tree sapling that grows through a crack in a sidewalk. If left alone for just a few months, it will cause the sidewalk to crack. That is what happens with tree roots and sewer lines.

  • What's in your water?
Unfortunately, a lot more than you might think. You don't have to take my word for it, it's easy to obtain a copy of your local water quality report. I've been in the plumbing industry for decades and it still makes me a little uneasy. Whole home carbon filtration is the best way to treat your home water supply. Municipalities add chlorine and amonia to kill any organisms that may exist due to travels through miles and miles of old pipe, but it's the homeowner's responsibility to make it more suitable for consumption at home. Activated carbon is the best way to absorb these impurities (1lb of activated carbon contains a surface area of approximately 100 acres). If reduction or removal of chlorine and chloromines is important to you and your family (the average swimming pool has less chlorine than our tap water), and if you'd like to reduce your bottled water consumption, consider a carbon-based whole home filtration system as a healthy and green solution to questionable water quality. In the not-too-distant future, every home will have a filtration system and we'll wonder how we ever got along without them!

  • Do You Have Dirty Sock Syndrome?

Associated with residential split systems, the term “Dirty Socks Syndrome” describes an odor generated by environmental fungi and/or bacteria that accumulate on the indoor coil. They can be ‘activated’ by the combination of moisture and heat commonly produced in air conditioning system operation.

Dirty Socks Syndrome can vary from mildly offensive odors described as smelling like old hair tonic, or moldy hay - to extremely offensive odors, often described in terms that would offend the more delicate sensitivities of the general public. “Dirty Socks” provides a good comparative description of the odor.

Eliminating the contaminants would exclude the possibility of Dirty Socks Syndrome, whether or not the system is operating at or near design conditions. If you're experiencing Dirty Sock Syndrome, we're happy to advise on the best methods for removing the odor. Give us a call anytime!
