In San Diego, our generally temperate climate tends to leave us craving air conditioning more than heating, however, there are definitely some cold nights. Make sure that your San Diego heater is ready to go when you need it by keeping it in top shape all year round. The safest way is to use a licensed San Diego heating contractor and get annual tune-ups with safety inspections, but you can check your own heating system for any obvious signs that repair may be needed.
Need a Heating Repair Contractor: What to Look for
To check your heating system, you must first know where to look. The best place to check is within your vent system itself. Use the largest access point in your home to access the system – you may need to unscrew a vent plate in order to do so.
In terms of what to look for, you are looking for any general signs of damage – whether it be water, ductwork damage, or general wear and tear. Keep your eyes out for black spots which may be a sign of mold. Also look for dust buildup – this may be a sign that you need to get your ducts cleaned, but could also indicate a larger issue. Look for signs of an animal or pest presence, such as bug carcasses, feces, or fur and feathers. General wear and tear can come in a variety of forms.
All ducts will experience wear and tear over time, so you do not need to worry about every minute dent or scratch. However, you should be wary if you notice dents pushed outward from inside the vent, thin, worn spots in the ductwork, cracked ducts or holes, and the like.
You should also keep an eye out for signs of water buildup or water damage, including the presence of condensation.
Before You Investigate your Heating System
Before you begin, make sure that your eyes and skin are properly protected. Keep protective gloves with you, goggles for your eyes to prevent dust or particles from falling into them, and an air filtering mask. Though hopefully, your system is fine as-is, this protective gear will ensure that your skin, eyes, and lungs remain healthy in the case it's not.
