The Health of Your HVAC System: When to Maintain, Repair or Replace

Mar 28, 2023

Ask yourself…when was the last time you had your heater and AC units serviced? With proper maintenance, your HVAC system will perform reliably for many years and save on energy usage. Annual tune ups for your heater and AC also help maintain your warranties, so if you do have any issues, the cost of repair may be offset by your warranty coverage.

Anderson’s Annual Heater Tune Up, Duct & Safety Inspections ensure your family’s comfort, reduce the need for costly repairs, and significantly reduce the risk of deadly carbon monoxide poisoning on gas heating systems with a comprehensive checklist that includes:

  • Inspect burners and flue pipe
  • Check carbon monoxide levels
  • Lubricate pumps and fans
  • Check temperatures and pressures
  • Inspect electrical connections
  • Condensate drain line and trap
  • Check heat exchanger for cracks and leaks
  • Check filters, motors and safety switch

Tune ups provide the opportunity to address minor issues before they become expensive emergencies and will also keep your equipment running more efficiently, helping you manage your energy usage. But like any equipment, as HVAC systems age, they are likely to start exhibiting symptoms that may force you to decide whether to repair or replace.

Signs your system needs attention:

  • Weak/inconsistent airflow
  • Inconsistent temperature control
  • Cycle frequently or constantly running
  • Odd noises
  • Repeated breakdowns
  • Refrigerant leaks
  • Rusty, old

Is Your Ductwork the Problem? You may be experiencing issues with your comfort system due to ductwork, rather than any problems with the heater or AC units. Home remodeling and additions may have been made without consideration for ductwork sizing, or damage and deterioration may have occurred. A thorough inspection of your ductwork may identify: Damaged air ducts, dirty/clogged ducts, improper sizing, restricted airflow, duct deterioration, mold growth, or a rodent/insect infestation.

Repair or Replace?

The lifespan of an HVAC system, or separate heater or AC, is typically about 10-20 years, depending on the type of unit and climate, and assuming proper installation and maintenance. Within that period repair may be a cost-effective option. But like any appliance or equipment, there comes a time when the units wear out, and the cost and inconvenience of repeated repairs lead to the consideration of replacement.

A major commitment.

Replacing your comfort system, and possibly your ductwork as well, is a huge consideration, but comes with many benefits. Technology and innovation continue to make new equipment a worthy investment, making your home more energy efficient and more comfortable.

You may also want to consider switching from a gas heater to an electric heater or a heat pump (which can heat and cool your home), especially if you’ve added solar panels to your home.

Anderson’s team of expert HVAC Design Consultants can help you navigate the decision process, providing information, options and free estimates so you can choose the best solution for your home and budget.
