Tips for Hiring a San Diego Plumbing Contractor

Apr 12, 2016

When you have a plumbing problem, you know you need an experienced San Diego plumber, but the process of finding and hiring a reputable plumbing company can be overwhelming. Your home could be at risk if placed in the trust of the wrong hands, yet so many plumbers are not licensed, bonded, or insured. With so many options to choose from, how can you be sure that you’re getting the best, most reliable, and most honest plumbing services in the area? Before you hire anyone to handle your plumbing repairs, installation, or tune-up service, ask to see their credentials. This is one of the most foolproof ways to ensure that a plumbing company is qualified.

Additionally, you’ll want to keep an eye out for certain tactics many plumbers use and avoid hiring a company that uses such techniques. These tactics can include:

  • Door-to-Door Solicitation – Be wary of plumbers that come to your door offering their services. While not always true, in many cases these plumbing services end up costing homeowners tons of money due to unfinished projects and more plumbing projects than initially existed.
  • Free Inspections and Scare Tactics – Many dishonest plumbers will offer completely free, full home inspections only to later return with a frightening list of problems. These can range from minor problems like leaky faucets to serious issues like faulty electrical wiring, and almost always are intended to scare the homeowner into taking immediate action. It’s always best to get a second opinion after a free plumbing inspection yields indications of a problem.
  • Requesting Cash Payments Upfront – Be wary of contractors who insist on being paid in cash, especially if they require upfront payment. After you have already paid, there is no way to guarantee that you receive the level of service you deserve. In some cases, a contractor may even disappear entirely once payment has been obtained.
  • Verbal or Handshake Agreements – Always get all your contracts in writing. Verbal or handshake agreements are impossible to enforce, as they create a he-said-she-said situation. Ensure that you get the protection you need as a homeowner by insisting on having all agreements put down in writing and signed by all relevant parties.

Above all else, it’s important that you protect yourself and your family. When looking for a plumbing contractor in San Diego, find a company that guarantees their services (again, in writing!) and provides background checks for their employees. You’ll also want to ensure that the contractor you choose is fully licensed and insured for your protection.
