When it’s cold outside, the last thing you need is your water heater going out. It's also a good idea to start thinking about replacement options before you come home to soggy carpet. You now have more than one option: storage or tankless?
Hot Water Heater Types
Conventional Water Heaters
Conventional water heaters store and continually heat water on standby. For large families with heavy water usage, storage heaters are certainly an option, but keeping 50 to 80 gallons of water hot burns a lot of energy! So many San Diego residents and small businesses are turning to tankless heaters.
Tankless Water Heaters
Tankless heaters (sometimes called on-demand heaters) heat water quickly in high-powered heat exchangers as the water is demanded. While tankless heaters usually cost more up front, they are more energy efficient. Energy.gov says, “For homes that use 41 gallons or less of hot water daily, demand water heaters can be 24%–34% more energy efficient than conventional storage tank water heaters. They can be 8%–14% more energy efficient for homes that use a lot of hot water -- around 86 gallons per day.” Many consumers find that a tankless heater makes a good supplemental water heater for locations that are further removed from the primary tank. Consumer Energy Center lists out some advantages and disadvantages to on-demand water heating, which can be summarized:
Tankless Water Heater Advantages:
- Compact in size
- Waste less water
- Longer equipment life
Tankless Water Heater Disadvantages:
- Initially more expensive
- Require a modulating temperature control
- Gas units require a direct vent
