Should I Replace My Heating Part 4

Should I Replace My Heating Part 4

Should I replace my heating and air conditioning system or should I repair my heating and air conditioning system. Part 4

The previous three blog posts focused mainly on replacing your heating and air conditioning system instead of making costly repairs. We still haven’t answered the question, “When is it best to repair?”

I have put together some guidelines below that should help you answer this question:

  • Check the weatherization of your home. Is there weather stripping around the doors to minimize any leakage? Check the attic insulation. Is it adequately insulated so that the heat loss or gain is minimized? The truth is that some homes structural envelope is so inefficient that a new heating and air conditioning system is not going to help the situation. It would be better for you to take care of the weatherization than to spend money on a new system. If that is the case with your home, I would spend money on minimal repairs and devote the rest of your resources to sealing your home. In the future you could consider replacing your system. By the way there are some major rebates available for doing this. Feel free to call us for details.
  • If you’re considering increasing your square footage through a remodel, but the start of that remodel is a year or more away…it may be better to repair and then consider replacing it as part of the remodel.
  • Cash through refinance or other financing options is simply not available to you at this moment…in that case you probably have no other option but to repair.
  • If you are selling your home ask the new owner if they are planning on making major changes to the home. If they are those changes might make any heating and air conditioning system you would purchase inadequate. In that case a new system will not have much value in the new owner’s eyes. With these circumstances I would repair rather than replace.
  • You might be aware of some innovation that is due to hit the heating and air conditioning industry and you know it is only 2 or 3 months away. It would make sense to repair and then replace when that innovation is available to you.
  • Check to see what buyer incentive programs may be on the horizon. Many of these can equal $1000-$1500 of high efficiency equipment. If the start of that particular promotion is several months off, you probably want to repair vs. replace.

One final note…our people are well informed about current and upcoming promotions. We’d be happy to come out to your house for a visit and share that information with you. Of course there wouldn’t be any charge for that service.
